GOP Crazies and Immigration

The list is long. The crazies are many. But never fear, there is a light in the dark! Someone actually said something nice about immigrants!

You may or may not have heard, but Rick Perry, current Governator of Tejas (aka Texas, the Lone Star state, greatest state ever) defended the fact that he signed into law the Texas DREAM Act in 2001, which made financial aid available to undocumented students.

Romney decided this was an angle, and went after him in the debate.

Perry’s response? “If you say that we should not educate children who have come into our state for no other reason than they’ve been brought there by no fault of their own, I don’t think you have a heart.”

Not bad. But then again, the day before the debate, Perry stated, “federal DREAM Act is just amnesty and I’m not for amnesty.”

It’s too bad. You were so close, Governor Good Hair! You almost had our admiration! You could have been a shining beacon of reasonable immigration policy in a room full of people with googly crazy eyes or no backbone.

Here’s to hoping that the conservative populism wears off by the general election. It’s getting dangerous.
